I recently found this photo circa 2002 of my sculpture/installation piece entitled, "Salsa Tower" which was part of my mexican food series from my advanced sculpture class at San Diego State. Silhouettes

I have been doing many child silhouettes lately. I've actually been kind of obsessed with them for a while, even my blog button logo is a cameo of myself.

I took the idea of the traditional profile silhouettes and gave it a contemporary, bright twist. These make a perfect custom gift and are less expensive than a portrait painting. These cameos can be created as a graphic print or as a painting on canvas. They can be done with typography(with words that relate to the subject etc) or a painted scene inside the silhouette.

Juror's Choice Award- Visions of Coronado

The Visions of Coronado Juried Art Show opening reception was a great success. One of my pieces won a juror's choice award!

"From now through February 20, Visions of Coronado, an exhibit of 23 recent works of art depicting some aspect of Coronado life will be on display at the Coronado Museum of History and Art. The juried show was selected from 60 original pieces submitted by artists from all over San Diego County and created in a wide variety of media, materials and styles.

The jurors were: Cornelia Feye, Director, School of the Arts and Art Education, La Jolla Athenaeum; Bill Mosley, Artist and Professor, Grossmont College; and Leah Ollman, Art Critic, Los Angeles Times.

Three Juror's Choice Awards were presented at the opening reception for:
Joan Boyer's oil painting, "Night-time on the Beach"
Anna Woerman's photograph entitled, "Blackout"
and Laurie McCray's photographic art printed on canvas,"Hotel Del Drive By."

Visions of Coronado is on view in the Museum through February 20. Bring your friends and stop by soon to enjoy these inspiring works of art!!" -Coronado Museum of History and Art

VAPA Standards Strands Posters

School is beginning and I just finished decorating my classroom/lab. I created these posters of the VAPA Standards Strands so that my students will be familiar with the various strands when we work on each project. These posters are hung in the corners of the classroom and each has an animal mnemonic which I learned at the awesome VAPA training sessions with Ron Jessee, SDCOE VAPA Coordinator, a few years ago! My goal is for them to know these by heart & understand when they are using them! (click image to make larger)

I love to bake, and I love to decorate unique pieces of edible art! Here are a few of my favorites from the last few years:

Cupcake Topiary

-Buy a styrofoam ball from Michaels, paint it with acrylic paint(optional)

-Stick ball onto branch in vase, etc.

-Ice cupcakes, push 3 toothpicks/cupcake into styrofoam, stick cupcakes on toothpicks!

"Sushi" Cupcakes

-Best presentation is in a reused sushi container!

-These are just vanilla mini cupcakes with frosting and shredded coconut on top to look like "rice"

-gummy candy and Swedish Fish for "raw fish"

-add chopsticks to complete the look

Rose Buttercream Cupcakes

-Buttercream frosting (put in fridge if too soft,can't be too soft when making the roses):

-3 sticks unsalted butter, softened

-1 lb powdered sugar (sifted!)

-1/2 teaspoopn quality vanilla extract

-1/2 teasoopn quality almond extract (optional-gives good flavor)

-gel food coloring (found at Michaels)

-Cream all together (add a 1/2 teaspoon of water at a time if mixture is too stiff/dry.

-to create the petals, use a pastry tip#104, There are tons of youtube tutorials on creating buttercream roses.

Pink Flower Cupcakes

-these are simple cupcakes with butter cream frosting and hardened royal icing flowers on top

Royal Icing:

-3 tbsp meringue powder (Wiltons)

-4 cups powdered sugar

6 tbsp water (warm)

-Create flowers on parchment paper using different pastry tips (many tutorials on youtube)

-let flower creations harden overnight

after royal icing flowers harden(keep in airtight dry tin), they will last years!

Lemon Cupcakes

Decorating Bag tips:

-Stem: round tip #1

-Leaf: leaf tip #65

-Flower: petal tip #104

Godfather Horse Head Cake

I made this for my 25th Birthday party! Anyone who is a Godfather fan will LOVE this!

This is a sheet cake (I bought one already made at Costco and had them leave out the frosting)

-I cut the sheet cake into a horse head shape

-I placed the cake on a satin "bed sheet" (bought yard of fabric)

-I iced it with chocolate icing, thin round tip for the "hair"

-I crushed strawberries around the cake and on the sheet for "blood"

Pretty morbid? I swear I am a vegetarian animal lover!

Dirty Dancing Cupcakes

Nobody puts these cupcakes in a corner!

-Cupcakes are Martha Stewart's recipe: Yellow Buttermilk Cupcakes

They are SO good.

-I iced cupcakes with pink tinted buttercream (like Baby's dress) and printed out mini DD movie logos on paper, attached to toothpicks to go on top.

Cincinnati Chili Cupcakes

-I LOVE Skyline Chili from Cincinnati, so I made a sweet version!

Here is my sweet three-way:

-Shredded Coconut dyed orange = "cheese"

-Thin ropes of white icing="spaghetti"

-Chocolate cake (you can add cinnamon flavor too)= "chili"

Fourth of July Berry Cheesecake

I was inspired by Kelsey's Essential Summer recipes and made this version for Fourth of July.

I was pressed for time and bought a store-bought cheesecake and dressed the top with blueberries and strawberries.

The Picasso Principle

I have always loved this story, and many (especially in the creative field) can identify with it:

The famous Pablo Picasso was at a party. A woman recognized him and approached the Master. She asked, “Will you create a sketch for me?”

Picasso agreed, and, as he pulled out his sketchpad, asked her for a subject.

“A bird in a tree will do,” she responded.

So Picasso spent about a five minutes doing what Picasso does on the sketchpad. Finished, he ripped the sketch off the pad, handed it to the woman and said, “That will be $10,000.”

The woman was floored. “Ten thousand dollars! Why, it only took you five minutes to draw that sketch!”

To which, Picasso replied, “No, madam. That sketch took me thirty years.”

Students will learn to improve the overall appearance of their digital photos and to output the to printer and electronic media by using the Photoshop tools and adjustment techniques most often needed by photographers. Students, by learning an organized approach to image correction, will understand the necessary steps to adjust and improve contrast color, sharpness and the image’s output size and cropping. A number of more advanced Photoshop tools and techniques also will be introduced including photo restoration, artistic filters, vignettes and watermarks.

Pizzeria Bruno - ONLY Napoli style pizza in SD!

I just recently returned from Italy, it was my 5th time visiting there. I first went when I was 19, then I lived there for a year when I studied abroad in Florence, then I returned in 2004, 2007 and now 2010. Every time I go, I thoroughly enjoy the excellent food, especially the pizza. Needless to say, returning to the US, I was craving true Italian pizza.

If you have never eaten pizza in Italy, you do not know pizza. American pizza can be good, but italian pizza, especially from the south in the Napoli (Naples) area, is superior. Pizza in Naples is made in wood fire ovens at high temperatures, and the result is a chewy crispy crust, with fresh tomato sauce (literally just crushed tomatoes and salt, simple), olive oil and buffalo mozzarella, all drizzled with olive oil.

If I have got your stomach growling, fear not, you don't have to travel to Italy for this experience! Pizzeria Bruno in San Diego opened in December 2009, and it is certified Napoli style pizza! Verace Pizza Napoletana (VPN) arose locally in Naples to preserve and promote high standards of excellence in pizza-making. They have set the gold standard of excellence for serious pizza restaurateurs and “pizzaiolos” (pizza makers) everywhere. Pizzeria Bruno's pizzaiolo is VPN certified!

I just recently ate here and it was EXCELLENT! They only have pizza and some appetizers on the menu, and beer and wines. Simple and quality. The photo above is my Pizza Margherita (ask for it with buffalo mozzarella).

I am so proud of my 9th grade CoSA art class for completing this excellent team art piece. We recreated Botticelli's renaissance masterpiece, The Primavera. On a recent stay in this fabulous contemporary cabin on the hills of Point Reyes, I took this night shot and captured the stars and fog rolling in. 25 second exposure! It was pitch black out there and you could see the Milkyway and Mars!

CoSA Digital Media Students Poster

This is a poster I designed of my Digital Media 9th Grade Students' charcoal self portraits. They all did a fantastic job on these! I gave it a pop art effect with the color. Venice Officials vs. Pigeons

The above picture is of me on one of my many trips to Piazza San Marco in Venice, Italy. I always bought corn from the vendors to feed the pigeons. It is such a fun experience.
Recently, Venice City officials want feeding the birds to be finito. They say the birds, with their poop and pecking, are ruining Italy’s art and architecture and harassing tourists and customers. (Officials will kill the birds) But some animal activists are flouting a ban on feeding them! Venetian pirates to the rescue! Read more in this LA Times Article.
Loser in this fight: City Officials. Come on, these birds are one of the unique things about Piazza San Marco, focus on bigger problems like Acqua Alta. -anna

Felice Varini

I have been thinking about Felice Varini ever since I opened his book in the giftshop at MOPA years ago. I had forgotten his name and somehow remembered it recently! He is known for his geometric perspective paintings of rooms and outdoor spaces. It is a total optical illusion that he creates: from head on, it looks like a geometric object floating in the space, but when you go to a different angle, you see how he paints every surface to create the look by using a projector to guide where he puts the lines. See the video below to fully experience and understand it!

Blistered Whiskers REVAMPED Logo and Website

We have been working on revamping the marketing materials for the wonderful non-profit, Blistered Whiskers!
Blistered Whiskers is a non-profit, 501c3, tax exempt organization dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation and adoption of feral kittens in Peoria, Arizona.
Blistered Whiskers' founder and CEO, Maggie Castagna, made the decision to create an organization focused on the special needs of young feral kittens. She has given these feral cats and kittens a second chance at life.
I am so inspired by her dedication to saving, nursing and finding new loving homes to each of these tiny lives that would have otherwise been killed. That is why Andrea and I want to help her cause and volunteer our services to promote this GREAT non-profit!

California's Prop 2 Passes!

I am so happy that Prop 2 passed!
Voters in California approved an historic ballot measure to halt the inhumane confinement of animals on factory farms by an overwhelming margin!

“California voters have taken a stand for decency and compassion and said that the systemic mistreatment of animals on factory farms cannot continue," said Wayne Pacelle, president and CEO of The Humane Society of the United States, the primary back of the YES! on Prop 2 campaign. "All animals deserve humane treatment, including animals raised for food."

Zagrodnik + Thomas Architects LLP announces the annual Green Scene Gallery event: EcoPalooza ’08 to be held on September 13, 2008 between 6:00 pm – 10:30 pm, at the firm’s North Park location; 3956 30th Street. The free event is open to the general public and will showcase local artists and designers whose work promotes sustainability. A fashion show of recycled materials will adorn several models, art and sculpture, and a ‘smartcar’, will all share space side by side in the gallery. The event coincides with North Park’s highly successful Ray at Night event and the USGBC and SD AIA’s San Diego Green 2008 Conference. Light refreshments and food will be served.
